Just Peace / QLD
Peace Network Nov 2008 e-Bulletin
|
|
 |
|
Dear Friends,
Welcome to the
November 2008 issue of the Just Peace e-Bulletin.
What an extraordinary year it's been! And it’s
still not quite over.
The Prime Minister, on behalf of the Australian
people, finally made the long-overdue apology
to the Stolen Generations, ratified the Kyoto
Agreement and has partly dismantled the highly
unpopular Work Choices legislation – all
important items on the Just Peace agenda,
as outlined in our 2007 brochure, Australia
at the Crossroads.
There has also been a welcome move back towards
the political centre in the United States –
much to the barely contained relief of the rest
of the world – and, hopefully at least,
a partial reversal of eight years of extreme right-wing
foreign, social and environmental US policy.
Even so, the world is still a deeply troubled
place and, as we are reminded on a daily basis,
facing uncertain economic times ahead. Whatever
eventuates in the coming year, Just Peace
will continue to chip away at the wall of social,
economic and political injustice that stands in
the way of achieving lasting peace.
But all that can wait. For now we have much to
be thankful for and, for this reason, Just
Peace will join with the Combined Union Choir
to make our end of year party a celebration of
music, poetry art and drama from some of Brisbane's
finest. See below for details.
Yours in peace,
Stephanie Campion

Farewell
to Kevin Clements |
Earlier
this year, we at Just Peace were
sad to learn that Professor Kevin Clements,
Director of the Australian Centre for Peace
and Conflict Studies (ACPACS) at the University
of Queensland, will be leaving to take up
a new position in Dunedin.
Professor Clements’
new role will be Professor of Peace and Conflict
Studies and the Foundation Director of the
Aotearoa-New Zealand Centre for Peace and
Conflict Studies at the University of Otago.
He will take up his new position sometime
in the new year.
Kevin and his partner,
Valerie, are returning home to New Zealand
after 17 years of living overseas.
We wish
Professor Clements all the best in his new life and role and wish to thank him for all
the enthusiastic support he has given to Just Peace over the years.

| Campaign
|
| Appeal to Lloyds
of London: Stop Underwriting the Burmese
Junta
The AVAAZ.org
global advocacy organisation is currently
promoting a campaign to appeal to the world’s
oldest and most inspected insurer, Lloyds
of London, to revise its insurance dealings
with Burma's military dictatorship. Many of
the Burmese Generals' West-linked business
ventures depend this one insurer.
’If enough of us email and call
key decision-makers at Lloyd’s this
week, we could shame them into pulling out
of this dirty trade, undermining the hardliners
and creating pressure for human rights and
the release of political prisoners like democratically
elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi.’

contact list to send emails, click
